Enigmatic string theories of yarn

Looking like she’s trying too hard

The quirky intellectual rides in on a unicorn

Wielding an Encyclopaedia Britannica

She says she’s gifted, but there’s no receipt

Transfixed in his eyes, his world is hers

But she’s on another planet

With some aliens she’s never met yet

A snowy town anemic in melanin

She was born in, thinking calling out difference isn’t nice

She culturally passes as white

The oreos consumed don’t belong in a jar,

She takes it too far

Grasps for falling stars, she takes in all the scars

From a childhood of deprivation

Not on the financial side

But overdrafting, card declines,

In the ways that make you feel alive

That money can’t buy

Her well of motivation’s coming up dry

Smiles shiny and radiant on the surface

But she calls to question purpose

There seems to be little point to it all

She’s frozen to reactions so she needs to stall

Feeling choked and estranged from an unspoken within

Her biggest critic lives under her skin

Anxiously wondering what lives in her family’s mind

Will they treat her kind or will she be maligned

Once they realize she belongs on the other side

The side they recommend to run and hide

Pray for salvation for a perverse condemnation

The only remediation to their consternation

Is evicting those voices living in her mind rent free

Doubt the efficacy of the degrees one achieves

When you graduate to yourself

You can finally live at ease
